literary essay the cask of amontillado

Copied to Clipboard. Montresor tells the story of the night when he took his revenge on Fortunato, a fellow nobleman. The james rekow thesis insignia is symbolic of Montresors evil character, who like the serpent intends to get revenge. Fortunato drank the Medoc and once again became boisterous and once more "his bells jingled." Fortunato toasted Montresor's buried ancestors, and Montresor returned the toast to Fortunato's "long life." When Fortunato noted how extensive the vaults were, Montresor told him that he heard that the.

Suddenly there was "a succession of loud and shrill screams" from inside the crypt and, at first, Montresor was momentarily frightened and then he delighted in joining in with the screams. His motive is uncertain other than the vague thousand injuries that he has suffered at the hands of FortunatoĆ¢ to which he refers. Or was he simply drunk with the carnival madness that was occurring throughout the city? The remainder of the story deals with Montresor's methods of entrapping Fortunato and effecting his revenge upon the unfortunate Fortunato. Ironic, considering the constant reiteration of Fortunado's imagery as a stumbling, gullible drunkard, repeating the description of his foolish jingling bells to the reader multiple times throughout the tale. In the very first lines of the story, the speaker, Montresor, reveals his loathing and desire for vengeance against another man, Fortunado. The narrator also says while asking him to go back I cannot be responsible, but he was conscious that he would be the only one responsible for that murder. Very frequently in the text we can see Montresor calling Fortunato his friend, while taking him to death. And it shows that he is not a reliable narrator because of his tendency to exaggerate terribly.
